Virtual Imperative Conference 2026
Gutenberg’s press of the 1400s sparked what became known as the print revolution. The printed book transformed mass communication and changed the world, remaining largely unchallenged until the emergence of computer technologies in the 1960s and the beginning of the digital revolution. In both moments, society was already primed for change: the technological and social conditions were in place, the benefits were becoming clear, and new forms of communication were rapidly adopted across the globe. In our own time, virtual reality and augmented reality technologies are now well established, yet their wider cultural, creative, educational and social value is still being defined. As debates around the Metaverse, immersive media, ownership, authorship, digital identity and cultural participation continue to evolve, XR represents not simply a technical development, but a social and cultural imperative requiring critical academic attention.
The Virtual Imperative is a one-day academic XR conference exploring the future of immersive technologies across research, entertainment, games, performance, media arts, education and creative practice. This unique and exciting one-off event brings together academics, researchers, postgraduate students, and creative practitioners to how extended reality is reshaping knowledge production, storytelling, audience experience, pedagogy, digital culture and interdisciplinary practice.Taking place across some of York’s most distinctive cultural venues, the conference combines academic paper sessions with curated site visits and sector-facing discussion. The day begins at SPARK with coffee, networking and the first academic paper session, featuring three research presentations exploring current developments in XR, immersive media and digital creativity.
Delegates will then visit the VR & Games Lab at the National Centre for Early Music, offering insight into emerging games and virtual reality practice within one of York’s historic cultural spaces. Following lunch, attendees will visit the UNESCO City of Media Arts Expo at the De Grey Rooms, situating the conference within York’s growing profile as a centre for media arts, creative technology and cultural innovation. The afternoon continues at the Yorkshire Museum with The Future of XR: Entertainment and Beyond, a masterclass connected to the film festival, examining how XR is transforming screen culture, immersive storytelling and audience engagement. The conference concludes with a second academic paper session, followed by an informal VR & Games Happy Hour at the Tippee Thor Tent in Museum Gardens.
With a limited capacity of 60 delegates, The Virtual Imperative offers an intimate academic setting for critical dialogue, knowledge exchange, networking and future collaboration.
